Boy, 8, likely tortured before his death, police say
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Police detectives probing the death of an 8-year-old boy last weekend say his mother likely tortured him for more than a year in a dark dungeon of a bedroom before he swallowed household cleaner Friday and died. Richmond, Calif., detectives arrested the mother, 23-year-old Teresa Moses, on suspicion of murder, torture and child endangerment Friday night after staff at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center called about the death. Welts and bruises in various stages of healing covered Raijon Daniels' little body, encased in a neck brace and a tube protruding from his mouth. The injuries told a long, horrible story of abuse: rope marks on his limbs, chemical burns, bed sores. Reports of Raijon's problems at home had crossed the desk of social workers at Contra Costa's Children & Family Services at least three times since May 2005, records show.
This House Keeps It Simple— And Ample—for Carnivores
Did you see those two monkeys in the Times Science section last week? The healthy, sleek and young-looking one lives on a Spartan, calorie-restricted diet. The other, a paunchy, wrinkled arthritic with matted fur who looks decades older, eats about twice as much each day. Which monkey would you choose to be? Are you ready to forgo a juicy, rare, dry-aged porterhouse in favor of vegan sausage for dinner? .
How Can Bacon Stall Low-Carb Weight Loss?
Courtesy of our friends over at The Weight Loss Daily Blog, I learned something new about the food that most people erroneously stereotype as the staple of livin' la vida low-carb: BACON!Although the idea that those of us who are on a low-carb diet sit around all day snacking on bacon, eggs and cheese is completely untrue, the popular perception by most uneducated people about this way of eating is that you should eat that way. That's why the people who go on their own version of "the Atkins diet" are robbing themselves of the right way to do low-carb.Because it seems the nitrates and nitrites that are added to bacon as a way to help preserve their color and protect against the growth of bacteria is actually the culprit in the added risk of cancer and those dreaded weight loss stalls. When nitrates and nitrites come under intense heat in the curing process, they are transformed into what is called nitrosamines.
